“…sun is shinning, the weather is sweet…” under the Maltese sun – and giving life to Bob Marley’s lyrics – we reach Sliema’s Bay, the starting point for our adventure: with our sunglasses on, we get in the car, windows down, the good vibe is playing on the radio… and we’re ready to go! Today we want to explore the south-east side of the island, the map is ready and the road is traced… one fact is that the road signs are not too… (how can I say…) obvious as we hoped, as the map is in English… But the signs are in Maltese! We were, literally, lost in translation! “was it to turn here?… or here?! Where are we?!”…after some wrong turns, we feel like the good reggae vibe has abandoned us… and the road has taken all the control! OH NO, NOT AGAIN!
After another (stressful) driving session, we – finally – see the sign: Marsaxlokk is getting closer! Uff…
This picturesque fishing village is like heaven for us: the calm is an imperative, a village lost in time (can you believe that there are no modern buildings or hotels around?) ornamented with brightly colored luzzu’s moored along the translucent green waters of the harbor, every one of them crowned by ‘the eye of Osiris’ to ward of the evil…
The views are so appealing, that we opt to sit in one of the many restaurants and cafes along the waterfront to enjoy a drink and admire the sea till it disappears in the horizon…
As we walk around the bay, we observe fishermen spending their morning painting and reviving the original colours spent by the hot sun and the salty waters, pampering their luzzu like a precious treasure and fixing some nets to be used soon.
Sun, sea… we feel like needing a dive! Wandering around the area (always with an eye on the map!) we find ourselves driving through sandy roads and narrow paths, contouring cliffs and discovering hidden places… till we get to an empty land with some cars parked… is it here? Is this St. Peter’s Pool? Well, no one knows us so… it doesn’t bother too much if they’ll catch us taking a peek! But, as we left the car behind and felt the see breeze, we knew that it was here: a stunning rocky inlet, a natural swimming pool carved into the white rock, is… breathtaking. The “pool”itself is a perfect postcard moment!
Legend tell us that St. Peter baptized some locals here when he visited the area… truth or legend… what we saw was this hidden gem with the clearest waters and a beautiful surrounding, with no more than a few locals on it… (important tip: if you’re in the mood to snorkelling… this is the place!) Although the access is not too easy (everyone jumps into the water… YESSS!), is not impossible to get in: we (aka – me and my dear fear!) make it to reach the water without jumping… not too easy, I must say, but totally worth it!
